I’ve had the privilege to work alongside other journalists in my newsroom on investigative pieces and special projects. My roles for each included writing content, creating effective headlines, and developing rollout strategies for the release. Some have been nominated for awards. Below are just a few examples.
A Different Cry
“A Different Cry” is a series about a subject matter that isn’t discussed enough in communities of color. Data and research shows suicide rates among Black children in America are double that of their white peers. In “A Different Cry,” we explored how bullying and racism are contributing to the startling statistics through the stories of two young children.
For this project, I got the chance to work with our investigative team, Atticus. Atticus produces online longform stories that aren’t always easy to talk about. In just our first week of releasing this series across our company, Tegna, we received more than 890,000 visitors. My job was to be in charge of the the digital aspects, including the layout of each story, creating the webpage for the content, overseeing the app section, and all of the digital behind-the-scene duties it takes to pull off a project of this magnitude.
There are multiple stories within the series. You can find them all here.
Mothers Matter
Mothers Matter is also an important project I worked on with Atticus. This series turned out to be the top story of 2018 for our company, Tegna. The project discusses maternal mortality rates. As the digital producer, I got to help with brainstorming, creating headlines, and social plans for everyone to follow. It was amazing to see this story start a conversation about an issue that needs more attention. And I was lucky to have a small part in it.
